About NEBOSH
NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) was formed in 1979 as an independent examining board and awarding body with charitable status. NEBOSH offer a comprehensive range of globally-recognised, vocationally-related qualifications designed to meet the health, safety, environmental and risk management needs of all places of work in both the private and public sectors.
Courses leading to NEBOSH qualifications attract around 30,000 candidates annually and are offered by over 400 course providers in 80 countries around the world. Our qualifications are recognised by the relevant professional membership bodies including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
NEBOSH examinations and assessments are set by its professionally qualified staff assisted by external examiners; most of whom are Chartered Safety and Health Practitioners operating within industry, the public sector or in enforcement.
Our technical standards are overseen by a Qualification and Technical Council with representatives drawn from national institutions.
In October 2000, NEBOSH became the first health and safety awarding body to be accredited by the UK regulatory authorities: The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in England, the Department for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.
In addition, NEBOSH maintains Investors in People (IIP) status and is also an ISO9001:2000 registered organisation.
Qualifications:- Certificate
NEBOSH's Certificate-level qualifications give a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities.
These qualifications are widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and are accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH).
Which Certificate should I take?
Students can choose to take the examined units in any order, and will receive a certificate denoting their achievement for each unit that they pass. When all units making up the qualification have been successfully passed, the student will receive the award parchment.
The unit-based structure allows students to:
- sit all examinations and the practical for the qualification at one sitting;
- spread their studies over a longer period;
- simply choose to study a single unit, for example for CPD purposes;
- use their previous achievements to attain additional certificate level NEBOSH qualifications.

Are you already one step towards your next NEBOSH Certificate?
Unit NGC1 is common to the National General Certificate, the Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management and the National Construction Certificate in Health and Safety (July 2007). This enables students to combine units across NEBOSH qualifications. Students do not need to re-sit any units successfully achieved providing they were gained within the five year period for each qualification.
Qualifications:- Diploma
NEBOSH Diplomas are globally recognised qualifications aimed at professional health and safety advisors and environmental practitioners.
Previous experience of health and safety is strongly recommended and entry requirements may be set by course providers. If you are looking to start your career in health and safety NEBOSH does offer certificate level qualifications that will provide a broad knowledge of health and safety in the workplace.
Completion of a NEBOSH Diploma provides an excellent foundation for further study. Diplomates are invited to the NEBOSH Graduation Ceremony held at the University of Warwick. Family and friends are also able to attend to enjoy and celebrate your achievement.
Which Diploma should I take?
NEBOSH’s National Diploma and International Diploma qualifications are designed for professional health and safety advisors. These qualifications equip holders for a career in this demanding but rewarding field. Both qualifications are accepted by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in meeting the academic requirements for the admission to Chartered Membership.
The NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management is intended for practitioners who have environmental responsibilities. Holders of the Environmental Diploma may use the designatory letters SpDipEM after their name.
Students can choose to take examined units in any order within their enrolment period, allowing flexibility in their studies. When all units making up the qualification have been successfully passed, the student will receive a Qualification Parchment.
